The monarch butterfly often has between 2-4 generations in a single season. In the case of all, aside from the last generation, the butterflies only live for a few weeks upon reaching adulthood. The last group of the season, however (often referred to as the “super generation), will undergo a several-month migration to a remote mountain range in Mexico where they overwinter.
